Telemark skiing is the best of both worlds: carving groomed slopes or Backcountry Alpine Touring. All you need are Telemark Boots, Telemark Bindings, and appropriate skis! If you’re heading out for some ski touring, you just need to add some Climbing Skins for those ascents and you’re ready to go.
If you’re going up to the next level and exploring the idea of ski mountaineering, you can certainly do that with Telemark ski boots, bindings, and skins, but you’ll need some additional gear. Any backcountry ski touring is going to require basic safety gear like Avalanche Shovels and First Aid, but it also requires additional technical equipment. Luckily, we carry the Mountaineering Harnesses, Crampons, Carabiners, Draws, & Belay devices you’ll need. We also have your next pair of Men's Mountaineering Boots or Women's Mountaineering Boots! Don’t forget your Snow Backpacks that are specifically designed for the special challenges of snow sports.
What are Telemark Boots?
Telemark boots are different from traditional alpine ski boots because they don’t have a fixed heel. They have a longer front edge (often called a “duckbill”) than Alpine Touring Boots. They offer more flexibility than traditional Cross Country ski bindings, too.
What is the Main Use of the Telemark Boot?
The main use and purpose of Telemark boots is the ability to do freeheel turns on downhill slopes. Some people Telemark ski exclusively on resort hills, while the more adventurous use them as an introductory to intermediate-level backcountry touring ski.
