Shoe traction devices go by many names and come in several styles: microspikes, shoe chains, ice cleats, crampons, snow spikes, snow cleats, and more. Whether you're winter trailrunning, mountaineering, or just trying to make it to the office, we've got the snow traction to help get you there.
What is snow traction?
Snow traction simply means reducing the slip and increasing the friction between your feet and the ground as much as possible. Normal shoe or boot tread may not do the job very well in deep snow, wet snow, snow over ice, or slush. The goal is to stay on your feet with minimal extra effort, and that's where snow traction comes in.
What can you put on your shoes to walk on ice?
To walk on ice, you'll probably want something spiked instead of a simple chain or rubber traction device that works well in snow but not so well on actual ice. They come in microspikes that are good for trails or around town. They come in beefier spikes for heavily icy backcountry trails, too. The biggest granddaddies would be crampons, large spikes that cover the whole sole of the boot and are intended for mountaineering, glaciers, and ice climbing.
