Even if you're a strong swimmer, you should never go out on the water without Water Safety & Protection gear for any water-related outdoor activity. All of the most experienced paddlers know that a life jacket (also known as a life vest) is something you can never leave back onshore. You never know when things will take a turn, and if you're unconscious or otherwise incapacitated you want to have proper flotation to keep that head above water until rescue arrives. No matter the boat or body of water, make sure you have the right life jacket for the conditions.image

What are 5 Basic Rules of Water Safety?

The 5 Basic Rules of Water Safety are:

  1. Know your limitations. Be realistic about your skill level, physical fitness, and medical conditions. Take some basic swim lessons, you’ll feel more confident. Stay sober and save the festivities for the shore when you're all done on the water.
  2. Never go it alone. Always bring a buddy when you're going out on the water so you can look out for each other. This is particularly important since there are a lot of places you’ll want to adventure off to but there won’t be a lifeguard watching over you.
  3. Use a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vest or life jacket that is sized properly for you and is designed for the activity (the one you use on a party barge isn't the same one you need for kayaking).
  4. Know how to signal for help. A safety whistle is the easiest way to do this. Keep it close to your head, firmly secured to your PFD (personal floatation device). Make sure every single participant or observer has a whistle to sound the alarm the minute they see danger or to signal that they're in trouble.
  5. Know and understand the water conditions before you go. This allows you to make a realistic risk assessment, safety plan, emergency response, and potential for needing water rescue. Ocean currents and river currents are very different, for example. Weather plays a huge part, don't risk it if the forecast is sketchy. Be mindful of water temperature, depth, and clarity (in case there are underwater hazards).

What are Some Water Safety Devices?

As mentioned above, the basic water safety devices are an appropriate PFD and an emergency whistle. Another handy thing to keep with you is a dive knife or river knife, especially if you're going to be around any ropes or rigging. These typically have a blunt point to avoid puncturing inflatables or accidentally stabbing yourself, and will be double-edged with a serrated side and a regular fine blade. In the event of a nasty entanglement, a dive knife can be a quick way out before you run out of air.
