SUPs (Stand-Up Paddleboard) are gaining more and more popularity every year. When you're out on flat water, these hybrids between a surfboard and a kayak give you the best of both worlds. You can choose from an inflatable stand-up paddleboard that you don't need a roof rack to transport or a more durable rigid SUP that's ready to go as soon as you get to the water.
What is a rigid SUP?
Rigid SUPs, as opposed to PVC inflatable SUPs, are solid boards made of a variety of buoyant materials like epoxy, fiberglass, bamboo, or foam core. It will usually require a roof rack or at least a bungee setup to transport it to and from the water. Many serious paddlers prefer high-quality hard paddleboards for their durability and longevity.
How long do rigid paddle boards last?
As long as it's properly maintained and stored, a lightly-used rigid SUP should last at least 5 years, and often many more. All based on use, of course, a frequently or heavily used SUP that is properly stored and maintained will usually last 3 to 5 years. Poor maintenance and negligent storage can mean that your SUP board may only last a season or two, so make sure to follow the manufacturer's care instructions!
