Fishing reels are second only to rods in importance when stacking tackle up against each other. Although fly fishing reels may look pretty much the same as opposed to baitcasting, spincast, and spinning reels which have noticeable design differences, fly reels are not all created equal. Drag, size, and construction will all affect performance and can be selected based on target species.
How much does a good fly reel cost?
A decent beginner fly reel will run about $70 to $150. Most beginners would do best to choose a rod and reel combo to take some of the uncertainty and indecision out of the buying process. Once you're comfortable and ready to upgrade, you may start getting into the $300+ range for a fly reel, and the most elite top-of-the-line (pun intended) fly reels can go as high as $1,500. Don't let that prevent you from getting into it, a lot of intermediate anglers are perfectly happy in the $150 range. As a tip, purchase at least one extra spool to match your reel, so if it's discontinued you won't have to buy a whole new setup.
How do I choose a fly reel?
First, do a little investigating to find out what an appropriate line size would be for your target species. For trout, you'll want to go on the smaller end of the middle ground. For larger fish like salmon, you should tend toward the larger end. Do some research on the best line size, and you'll be set for what kind of reel to get. Reels (and fly rods) are matched up to the line size, with reels typically having a range so that the #5 line would fit on a #3-5 reel or a #4-6 reel, giving you some leeway on 3 different line sizes with different high and low ends.
