Although the internet provides us with news, music, and communication, the radio is not obsolete. In areas where there is no internet access, or during emergencies when both power and internet are out, a portable radio is perfect for getting your news, information, and entertainment. Two-way radios, more commonly known as walkie-talkies, are still used all the time for instant communication where cell coverage is nonexistent. 2-way radios are also used by militaries all over the world and emergency first responders like police, EMTs, and firefighters. Just like your cell phone, many modern digital or AM/FM radios and walkie-talkies are capable of Bluetooth connectivity.image

Which radio is best for home?

In the event of an emergency, it can be a good idea to have two-way radios on hand to communicate with neighbors. For a digital or AM/FM radio, you'll want a portable radio (even as small as a pocket radio) that runs on batteries so that you can listen for local alerts on the emergency broadcast system. You also want to look for one that is marked as a NOAA Weather Radio to get the latest weather alerts from the nearest NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) station. Some emergency radios even incorporate other handy features like an LED flashlight.

Aside from emergencies, there are many ways that people use radios at home. You can find one with a retro look to accent your home's design and decorating. There are also a lot of clock radios and alarm clocks that have adapters to work as a charger for your cell phone and other mobile devices, either as a brand-specific dock or with USB ports.

What is DAB on radio?

DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting, a technology developed in the 1980s that began being widely used in several countries by the mid-1990s. They are not used in the United States, as the FCC has determined that it would cause signal interference with AM/FM radio and TV due to the sheer landmass of the country.

Are digital radios better?

Although not DAB radios, digital radios are sold and used in the United States. According to the FCC, "Digital radio is the transmission and reception of sound processed into patterns of numbers, or "digits" - hence the term 'digital radio.' In contrast, traditional analog radios process sounds into patterns of electrical signals that resemble sound waves." When used in two-way radios ("walkie-talkies"), the sound is much crisper and clearer, particularly in noisy environments where an analog radio's microphone will tend to pick up all sounds and distort or even completely obscure the voice of the person speaking. Generally speaking, most users prefer digital 2-way radios.
