What is a Portaledge used for?

A portaledge is a platform that is hung from an anchor and allows climbers to camp and sleep on sheer cliff walls and, in some cases, up in very high trees. While suspended, the portaledge serves as a base for rest, sleeping, cooking, and all of the other activities that go along with camping (except stuff like bocce ball). They come in both single and double models, with the larger doubles able to accommodate 2 sleeping climbers or one climber with plenty of room for more gear. They're very similar to belay seats, providing a flat horizontal surface where everything else is vertical.
