When it comes to climbing, you will want to make sure you have all the Rock Climbing & Bouldering Gear needed for your safety and enjoyment. One of the most important pieces of gear is your climbing harness which will attach you to your Dynamic Climbing Rope or Static Climbing Rope. Padding in the waistband and leg loops allows for protection during falls and comfort while climbing. This is especially helpful when climbing outside on jagged rocks.image

Choose a climbing harness with plenty of gear loops are durable loops on the waistband that allow you to clip extra gear, such as Belay Devices, Carabiners, Cams, and other necessary Climbing Gear to your harness. Haul loops are designed for carrying a second rope when climbing multi-pitch.

Adjustable buckles in the waist and leg loops allow for a customized fit. Some gym-specific harnesses do not feature adjustable buckles on the leg loop since you are less likely to be wearing multiple layers while climbing indoors. Insulation is sometimes added to the waistband and leg loops to accommodate Ice Climbing and provide extra warmth.

Our collection of climbing harnesses features a large selection from top brands including:

For the complete package, don't forget to get to your Belay & Rappel gear, Climbing Shoes, and Quickdraws so you can be prepared and ready for your next climbing expedition.

Are Climbing Harnesses OSHA-Approved?

All climbing harnesses are not necessarily OSHA-approved, but they may be. That might sound confusing, but there are several different rating systems and certifications for harnesses. Some of the entities that rate climbing harnesses and industrial harnesses:

  • OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
  • Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA)

On climbing harnesses you’re more likely to see the following, even though there is no single agency or organization that specifically regulates rock climbing harnesses:

  • CE (Conformité Européene) is a marking that indicates that a product complies with European Union (EU) safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. The CE marking is required for certain types of products that are sold within the EU, including climbing harnesses.
  • EN 12277 is a European standard that specifies safety requirements for climbing harnesses. The standard covers harnesses used for rock climbing, ice climbing, and Mountaineering, as well as harnesses used for work positioning, rope access, and rescue operations. The "type C" classification refers to harnesses that are designed for use in industrial rope access and rescue operations.
  • The UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation) is a non-profit organization that develops safety standards for climbing and mountaineering equipment. The UIAA Safety Label is a certification mark that indicates that a product has been tested and meets the UIAA's safety standards.

Is There a Difference Between Male and Female Climbing Harness?

Although there are plenty of unisex climbing harnesses, you’ll find a lot more comfort getting one that is specifically for men or women, since they’re designed to fit the specific shape and proportions of the human body. A proper fit also ensures climbing safety.

Climbing harnesses for women are designed to fit the smaller frame and shape of the female body. They usually have a shorter rise (the distance between the waistband and the leg loops) and a wider range of sizes to accommodate different hip widths. Women's climbing harnesses may also have padded leg loops and a wider waistband for added comfort.

Climbing harnesses for men are typically designed to fit the longer and more rectangular shape of the male body. They may have a longer rise and a narrower range of sizes to accommodate different hip widths. Men's climbing harnesses may also have less padding in the leg loops and waistband compared to women's harnesses.
