What is a fly leader?

How long should your fly leader be?

The exact length of your fly leader is up to personal preference. If you're looking for a guideline, most leaders are between 6 feet and 12 feet long, so 9 feet is a good median point. If you're going with a heavier fly, you might want to go more toward the shorter end of the range, at around 6 to 7 feet.
