Under the water, it is an entirely different world, and while most anglers may have an idea of where the fish are, most of the time, it all comes to guesswork. With an electronic fish finder, the hard part comes easy. With sonar technology available, you'll be able to various underwater information, such as water depth, distribution of fish school, and the seabed condition, by transmitting ultrasonic waves into the sea and receiving its reflection. The shared sonic or ultrasonic waves reflect the source when they hit an object (e.g., fish school or seabed). A fish finder uses this ultrasonic reflection characteristic.
What Is the Newest Technology in GPS Fish Finders?
SONAR has been a big deal with fish finders in the last couple of years! We have bulleted out the various SONAR features to help you decide what works best for you!
- Traditional Sonar: Other known as "2D" sonar. This type of sonar pings in a cone. Anything that is inside the cone is then displayed on the screen.
- CHIRP: CHIRP Sonar uses 2D technology on a set frequency. You can choose through a range of frequencies from 70-110 kHz. CHIRP transducers put more sound wave energy into the water providing better returns and more detail into the display.
- Imaging Sonar: Imaging sonar pings a narrow beam either to the sides (Side Imaging) or straight down (Down Imaging). When the boat is moving, the sonar returns stack on each other, creating a realistic image of the lake bottom and showing fish and structure up 100ft to either side of the boat.
- 360 Sonar: 360 Sonar Transducer sweeps side to side, creating a full circle image of the sea or lake bed all around your boat.
- "Live" Sonar: Live Sonar is a forward-facing sonar favored by bass and crappie anglers. Garmin is known for its Live Sonar technology with the LiveScope.
