What is the Purpose of a Climbing Pack?

Climbing Packs and Bags are perfect for hauling gear while hiking to the crag, heading to the gym, or ascending tricky Alpine Climbing routes. These packs are designed with unique features and designs that make them a must-have for any true climber. In order to help you find the best pack we want to highlight these features and designs for you.image

How Do Climbing Packs Differ from Regular Backpacks?

Climbing Packs are designed in three different ways

  • Daypacks - suitable for short trips to the crag, aka Crag Packs
  • Haul Bags - great for climbs that require more gear and may require a hike to get to
  • Alpine/Mountaineering Packs - perfect for longer expeditions to climb the peaks of the world where lightweight feasibility and proven durability are keys to success.

Many smaller climbing packs are designed to sit high on a climber's back for compatibility while wearing Harnesses. The larger haul bags usually share a similar design with the common backpacking pack due to their larger load capacities. All climbing packs are designed with abrasion-resistant materials to protect from snags and tears on jagged rocks. One important design feature is the loading style. Top Loaders are designed to be opened from the top. This is the most popular loading style. Clam Shell bags are designed to open completely and lay flat, similar to the opening of a clam.

What are the Benefits of a Climbing Backpack?

Some important features to pay attention to are:

  • Anchor Points: Durable webbing loops sewn to the outside of the pack that are for clipping Carabiners, Quickdraws, Belay Devices, and other Climbing Gear for easy access.
  • Compression Straps: Strategically placed straps that allow you to compress your bag.
  • Hip Belts: Usually found on large-capacity haul bags to support carrying additional weight with comfort and ease.
  • Rope Tarps: Also usually found in large-capacity haul bags. These tarps are placed on the ground to protect your rope from rock, sand, and other hazards that could damage and compromise your rope.
  • Ice Axe Carrying Straps: Loops on the side of the pack for quick access ice axe storage.
