Climbers clips are usually called Carabiners, which are metal loops with spring-loaded gates that are used to connect ropes and other Climbing Gear. Carabiners are an important safety feature in climbing, as they allow climbers to securely attach themselves to the rock or mountain face and prevent falls. They are also heavily relied upon for carrying gear attached to Harnesses. They are essential for rock climbing, Mountaineering, ice climbing, and similar outdoor activities. Carabiners are found in a variety of shapes and sizes and are designed to be lightweight, strong, and easy to use. Some, like locking carabiners, take a little more practice to use but offer a more secure gate.
Some carabiners are designed for specific uses, while others are more general purpose. There are also carabiners that are not rated for climbing and are intended to attach different types of gear that aren’t load-bearing and won’t be needed for the climber’s safety.
There are many different pieces of equipment that climbers may use, depending on the type of climbing they are doing and the level of difficulty of the route. Here are some of the most common pieces of equipment that climbers may use:
This is just a basic list, and climbers may use other equipment depending on the type of climbing they are doing and the specific needs of the route. It's important for climbers to be familiar with all of their equipment and to use it correctly to ensure their safety while climbing.
The equipment used to belay a climber is called a belay device, a mechanical piece of equipment that is used to control a rope during belaying, which is done by a climber’s partner who is on the ground or another secure spot below the climber. Belaying is controlling the rope so that it has a little slack as the climber ascends but not so much as to get tangled up. If the climber falls, the belayer stops the rope and arrests the fall to avoid injury. They create friction on the rope, allowing the belayer to easily hold the rope in place or let it out slowly as the climber ascends. Some common types of belay devices include tube-style devices, assisted-braking devices, and figure-eight devices. It is important for climbers to be familiar with the use of a belay device and to use it correctly to ensure the safety of both the climber and the belayer.
Via Ferrata is a unique style of climbing that takes out the need for rope due to a fixed steel cable running from the start of the route to the finish. Climbers use a Via Ferrata Kit to secure themselves to the cable, limiting the danger of any fall.
