Can you alpine ski in touring boots?
Yes, you can alpine/downhill ski on AT boots and bindings. Since alpine touring bindings are dual-purpose and are used for descent as much as ascent, you just need to make sure your heels are locked in and you’re good to go!
Do you need special boots for alpine touring?
Yes, you do need special alpine touring ski boots when you’re using alpine bindings. This is because of the difference in binding compatibility. The biggest difference between alpine (downhill) and alpine touring ski boots (AT boots) is the heel that attaches to Alpine Touring Bindings. Alpine skis have a fixed heel, and alpine touring bindings have an unlockable heel to assist backcountry skiers in ascending the slope. This allows ski touring since you can go off-trail and won’t need a lift to get to the top.
What is the difference between alpine and alpine touring?
Alpine skiing is more commonly known as downhill skiing. This is where you take a ski lift or hike up to the top of the run and then ski down. Downhill skis don’t have any ascent capabilities. Alpine touring is backcountry skiing similar to Cross Country except on steeper slopes.
What are some other names for alpine touring boots?
Alpine Touring Boots are also called “AT Boots” or backcountry ski boots. Telemark Bindings and boots are also for backcountry skiing, but they have a different design.
