What is the difference between alpine and touring bindings?

The biggest difference between alpine (downhill) and alpine touring ski bindings (AT bindings) is the heel that attaches to ski boots. Alpine skis have a fixed heel, and alpine touring bindings have an unlockable heel to assist backcountry skiers in ascending the slope. This allows ski touring since you can go off-trail and won’t need a lift to get to the top.

Can you alpine ski on touring bindings?

Yes, you can alpine/downhill ski on AT bindings. Since alpine touring bindings are dual-purpose and are used for descent as much as ascent, you just need to make sure your heels are locked in and you’re good to go!

Do I need special boots for alpine touring bindings?

Yes, you will need special Alpine Touring Boots when you’re using alpine touring bindings. They have matching sockets at the toe piece and heel to secure them to the skis and require special touring boots to work together. These are often called tech bindings, and the best-known brand that makes them is Dynafit.
